I am the founder of OT Skills for Kids (previously, Special Kids Hero) dedicated to assisting children with diverse abilities, along with their families and educators since 1996.
I am also the author of The Eating Handbook for Children with Autism and Strategic Parenting. And, the creator of the Toilet Training That Works online course and the Special Kids Hero YouTube channel.
Born in Montreal, Canada, I relocated near Toronto at the age of two, enjoying typical childhood activities such as hockey, soccer, and track. During my university years in London, Ontario, where I pursued a degree in physical education, my interest in working with individuals with a range of abilities developed.
To support my studies, I acquired my first computer from a technology company specializing in solutions for people with disabilities. Subsequently, I secured employment with the same company during the summers, gaining experience in providing technology solutions for individuals with visual impairments, physical access challenges, and communication difficulties.
In my fourth year of university, I took on the role of coaching an electric wheelchair floor hockey team, comprised of children and teens with physical impairments affecting all four limbs, who relied on power wheelchairs for mobility. Witnessing their determination and resilience was profoundly inspiring. Although our team faced challenges at the National Electric Wheelchair Championships in Calgary, their unyielding spirit and sportsmanship left an enduring impact on me.
Recognizing the limitations of my physical education degree in working with individuals with diverse abilities, I applied to an Occupational Therapy program at McMaster University. After completing my Occupational Therapy degree, I accepted a position in Tennessee, USA for a year with my best friend and we had a blast experiencing life in a small rural town, where the locals delighted us with their amazing hospitality and fabulous Southern drawls!
My professional focus had primarily been working with teens and adults with neurological injuries, including brain injuries, spinal cord injuries, strokes, and other neurological conditions. Following the birth of my son, my family moved to British Columbia, where I returned to pediatrics at a Child Development Centre for over 12 years. I currently offer services within the school district and through private practice.
While recovering from a broken ankle, I found inspiration to write my first book, The Eating Handbook for Children with Autism. This experience led to the creation of my second book, Strategic Parenting, and a second edition of The Eating Handbook for Children with Autism.
Following this, I created the comprehensive Toilet Training That Works online course and authored the essential guide, Six Mistakes You Must Avoid When Toilet Training Your Child with Autism. While I enjoy the art of writing books and blogs, I developed the YouTube channel, Special Kids Hero, to offer helpful guidance and practical resources tailored to address the common queries I receive from the exceptional parents and teachers I have the privilege of working alongside.
During my rehabilitation from multiple fractures in my spine, I was inspired once again to update my Eating Handbook and completed The Eating Handbook for Children with Autism, 3rd Edition.
Collaborating with my wonderful husband, we established this website to extend support to parents, caregivers, teachers, and children globally.
My mission is to provide meaningful and practical solutions to your everyday challenges. The resilience of the electric wheelchair hockey players established them as heroes in my eyes. Just facing their daily challenges and conquering them made them heroes. I would like to help you be the hero you are meant to be because we all need heroes in our lives.
